WIAW: Saved By The {Quest} Bar!

Hey there foodies!

Happy What I Ate Wednesday!

Before we get to partying it up, I wanted to share a few thoughts. I actually wasn’t going to share this day of eats because, after last week, I didn’t want you guys thinking all I eat are bars, BUT since I’m staying true to my word and going UNplanned with the WIAW posts from now on, I thought who cares! You know what, sometimes shit Quest bars happen! Honestly, if it wasn’t for these super filling protein packed bars, my wallet would be a whole lot thicker life would be a lot more stressful. Seriously, how am I’m NOT an affiliate for them!? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ok, onto some eats already!

Quest Bars

There were three days last week where I woke up in the middle of the night with my stomach growling and Friday was one of them. While I think I’ve got my last meal of the day better balanced now to keep me full throughout the night, I was grateful to have a stash of Quest bars in the pantry to save me from having to wake up and make something to eat.

Yep, I shuffled my way to the kitchen with half-closed eyes and then shuffled my way back to bed with a peanut butter supreme hanging out of my mouth…#noshame! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Unfortunately on this particular day, my post Quest bar slumber was no more than an hour or so. At 5am I gave up and started my day with my morning cocktail…

ACV DrinkI promise not all of the pics today will be recycled ones from last week! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Then it was off to the gym!

Workout - Go Cubs!

Where I had one of the best LEG workouts I’ve had in a while!ย

I’d like to think my high school mascot, Cubby, was rooting me on while I did my modified squats, lunges, and leg raises. Gotta whip this knee into SHAPE!

After a good 45 minute (or so…I have no idea sinceย I don’t HAVE to know all the numbers anymore…woot woot!) workout, I was back home and ready for breakfast!

Cottage Cheese + Cinnamon Apples + GranolaCottage cheese bottomed with puffed kamut cereal and topped with warm cinnamon apples and “Grail” mix…oh and a shitton more cinnamon added post pic.

Ummm, how am I just now discovering the deliciousness of Saigon cinnamon?!

Coffee

To balance out my cold breakfast, I had not one, but TWO cups of coffee (one half caff, one DECAF) which helped to power me through some errand running.ย I ended up having to swing by work for something and once I saw smelled that they had just cranked up our handy-dandy movie theater-style popcorn popper, I couldn’t resist…

Popcorn

I’m actually glad I grabbed it because after a “quick run” to TJ Maxx turned into over an hour of frolicking around and buying ALL THE THINGS, I was famished by the time I got back to my car!

Go in for shampoo and conditioner, come out with shampoo, two conditioners, three pairs of leggings, four packs of ginger chews, and โ™ซย FIVE GOLDEN RINNNNNNGS! โ™ซ

Oh I’m sorry, too early? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Back at the house, it was all about food, FAST, in the face NOW!

Bagel Thin with Cream Cheese and Spinach Egg Puff

Enter an everything bagel thin with Greek herb and garlic cheese spread (still obsessed) and a micro-spinach egg puff thingy…side of carrot sticks.

Eggs (and/or whites) + spinach + blender + microwave (2 minutes) = PUFF!

And for dessert?

Persimmon

The most perfect-est fruit in all the land!ย AKA: a persimmon. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Later that night, I made the trek to the man-friend’s place. I say trek because I forgot that a certain suit and tie was in town for a concert…therefore DOUBLING the amount of time it takes to get anywhere in Nashville!

Needless to say, when I FINALLY got to his door, I was ready for some grub! Luckily, Calypso Cafe is right down the road and thoughts of their incredibly delicious greens made me start drooling. Since I’ve only been once before, I decided to order something a little different…

Calypso Cafe - Greens, Beans, & BurgerI decided to go with the Island Burger (first burger in MONTHS…I was so excited!) with a side of mustard greens (had to) and some bean and corn salad in lieu of chips.

Well, I guess when they say “island burger” they mean a slab of meat that washed up on the shore and laid out in the sun all day because that was the driest, nastiest burger I’ve ever tasted! What the FRENCH, toast? I could have ordered something else, but I actually found my sides to be pretty filling so I just gave the waiter the stank eye made do. Oh and I of course had to ninja two bites of the man-friend’s nachos…

Calypso Cafe NachosHard to tell from the pic, but there’s actually black beans and chicken under all that glorious melty cheese!

Then it was time for me to drool over something ONE else! ๐Ÿ˜‰

And I guess luscious locks and chiseled abs tend to distract me in more ways than one because once we got back home (at nearly 11pm), all of a sudden I felt like I could gnaw my own arm off! The man-friend, armed for such Hangry Heather moments, quickly tossed me a mandarin…like literally TOSSED ME A MANDARIN!

Mandarin Orange

After it hit me in the head and bounced to the floor (kidding), I picked it up and inhaled it in 2 seconds (give or take). But as cool as that little cutie was, I knew it wasn’t going to hold me over long.ย It was late. There was no time. Face-plant was inevitable.

I had to call for reinforcements…

Quest Bars

And a mixed berry BLISSful night sleep soon followed!

Well except for the weird citrus-induced dreams…but that’s a story for another day!

WIAW Teal

Now scoot! Off to Peas & Crayons you go! You’ve got links to drool over…and I’ve got a Quest bar stash that needs replenishing! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Does your significant other abuse you with flying fruit?

Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night hungry? What do you do?

  1. HAH! I love the Ginger Chews (and I find it odd that TJ Maxx always has them… but I’m not complaining. haha) but I should give you my quest bars! I have some sitting in my cabinet and I’m not a big fan ๐Ÿ™ They kind of make my stomach hurt, but I’m not sure why! Maybe something in it? It’s a shame because the stats on those little guys are fantastic!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh no! Maybe it’s the erythritol or the fiber? I’m actually surprised that my stomach can tolerate them (ESPECIALLY two in one day) since I’ve had a history of fiber sensitivities. If you’d like someone to take them off your hands, I’d totally be up for a little mail swap! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. ๐Ÿ˜† Gotta love a man who’s well prepared ๐Ÿ˜€ My guy knows to make sure that food is never far away as well because yeahโ€ฆ things get a little ugly (I almost wrote “ungry” ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ) when I get too hungry. Keep me fed, and life is good.

As for waking up in the middle of the night with a grumbling stomach — it definitely happens sometimes. I’ll usually plod off to the kitchen to grab something, and then pass back out on the couch. There’s NO way I can sleep when I’m hungry, so I gave up even trying a long time ago.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

“Ungry” haha! I think we should start using that! It’s nice to know I’m not alone on the waking up thing…it seems so weird to be getting up to eat in the middle of the night, but I swear the longer I ignore it, the worse it gets! The man-friend has already gotten used to me coming to bed and then getting up 20 minutes later for a snack! Lol

  3. Every.single.night. Last night I made a mug cake at 4:00 AM and it was amazing and I made it up and if my parents weren’t sleeping upstairs a photography session would have ensued. Quest bars are my savior!!!!

  4. I went into TJMaxx the other day and saw the Ginger chews. I’ve never tried them but was very tempted to buy them. Ultimately, I decided to passโ€ฆfor now. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I passed by them for YEARS, but once I bought one pack, I was totally sucked in! Now I’m always scouring the stores for them! Lol

  5. Chrystal says:

I really need to get back into the Apple Cider Vinegar routine. It did so many wonders for this body.

I’ve never tried the Quest bars. I tend to keep that sort of stuff out of the house. In my brain it looks at it like a candy bar. Ugh. I try to keep some homemade snack bars on hand. In a hangry pinch, nuts work for me.

I know I am new to your blog, so maybe I have missed an old post about this, but seriously, you need a cookbook! You have so many wonderful eats here. I keep making notes and printables.

    I can’t keep up! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, thank you so much Chrystal! It’s definitely a dream of mine to have a cookbook someday, but sheesh, I don’t even know where to start! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

      • Chrystal says:

Well if you ever need any help…. I’ve been there. I have a handful of books under my name and working on a recipe booklet right now. I have about 30 under a pen name. It can be overwhelming, but you have so many wonderful eats that I know so many people could benefit from!

        • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh wow! REALLY?! That’s awesome, Chrystal! I might just take you up on that after things wind down around here…I know myself and I know I will totally FREAK OUT about everything, so I need a bit of time to even process this as a possibility right now! Haha!

  6. I wake up in the middle of the night hungry but I usually just ignore it. Occasionally last year the stomach grumbling would be so bad like it was eating itself in starvation… ๐Ÿ˜ฏ that I’d get up and grab a hunk of chicken or beef from my fridge (what a snack, I know. Lol). Anything late at night though keeps me up and messes me up so I try to refrain.

Justin Timberlake. Just being in the same city with him… Haha. Kind of kidding. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I bet that was super annoying with traffic though!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, hon!!! ๐Ÿ™ I hate to hear that, but I’m sorry, I have to giggle just a bit at the mental image of you gnawing on a “hunk of chicken or beef”! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Lucie says:

I neeeed to go back on the spinach egg puff thingy wagon!! Seriously, I love this stuff and it looks so perfect in that bagel.
Don’t worry, I have weeks where I eat Questbars daily. And I’m still alive! Actually, I just packed a Peanut Butter Surpreme today and will demolish it later today!

  8. Kat says:

Fortunately, my hubby is well aware of my ED issues and my constant need for food, so he’s pretty accommodating. Which is good (for him) because I turn into a raging BEAST when Im hungry!! No really….its not a pretty sight….
And I lurveeee my egg puffs!! Its my go to when I don’t have time (ok or the want) to turn on my oven and get a pan going.

  9. Fortunately Eric has never abused me with flying fruit, but he does know the importance of getting me food when I’m getting hungry…nobody likes to deal with that ๐Ÿ˜‰
And Quest bars are always a good way to go! I keep a stash in my kitchen and one in my purse at all times. I usually eat before bed to make sure that I don’t have a wake up in hunger moment, but it still happens on occasion. If it’s just a little grumble I roll over and go back to sleep, but if it’s a super-hungry moment I’ll stumble to the kitchen for a handful of cereal or two before heading back to sleep.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

What’s crazy is that the “midnight” hunger pangs happened during my work week…where my last meal for the “day” is just before bed…I think I just wasn’t getting the right ratios of fat and protein to keep me full. Luckily it hasn’t happened any this week! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. My significant other abuses me with anything he throws at me, because I have horrible hand-eye coordination. I don’t like things flying at my face!

I’ve only ever had small bites of Quest Bars, and I’ve never had one heated up, which is supposed to be amazing. They don’t sell ’em at Trader Joe’s where I do most of my grocery shopping, so I just don’t buy them.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg yes! I swear some of them taste exactly like a dessert bar when heated. I got the man-friend hooked on them months ago and he’s always raving about how great they taste to all his friends! Seriously, the company should be PAYING us for all the advertising we do for them! Lol

  11. Brittany says:

I often wonder why I am not an affiliate for companies I obsess over! HAHA! My go to would be Enjoy Life Foods, and CLIF bars..ohh man. OHHH MAN! I have never had a quest bar because they are made with whey protein, and I don’t eat any dairy, but BOY DO THEY LOOK GOOD!! You can have my portion..sound good!?

I love that your guy had food stashed for you, I’d call that a keeper!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yeah, he’s definitely good to me…and patient with my hangriness! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’ve only tried a few of the Enjoy Life Foods products. They’re sunbutter bars are pretty good, but they are SO small! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

  12. Haha. Does your significant other abuse you with flying fruit?
Ok girl, I’ll point it out! REAL FOOD!!! It’s working!! Eating, reaching for, making REAL FOOD to get out of that rut!
And the gym!! Go girl! You know I’m rooting you on!
I’d make a terrible WIAW contributor. I’m sucking down my fourth drink of the day…as in I’ve had nothing but various liquids since 5:30 this morning…yawn, boring.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yaaaaaaaaaaay!!! *backflip* <- Let's just pretend that I actually have the coordination to do that in real life! ๐Ÿ˜‰ What's with the liquid diet, homes? Yep, I just said that in my best Mexican American accent! Lol

  13. Oh and…ORDER YOUR QUEST BARS THROUGH ME (this is a note to your readers ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) hahahaha. No worries, you’re not missing much by not being an affiliate for them. I practically pimp myself since I’m an affiliate and it’s hard work for very little dough…cookie dough…mmmm…

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww! ๐Ÿ™ I’d love to order them through you, love, but I’m firmly committed to the “touch test” when buying Quest bars. I’ve had too many mail in orders of rock hard tasteless crap! Booooooooo!

  14. Don’t hate me… I cannot stomach Quest bars.

  15. I usually wake up hungry in the night if I’ve done a hard workout the night before. I usually just go back to sleep, but sometimes I silence the beast with a scoop of PB or coconut butter!!

  16. LOVE quest bars, they are my go to protein bar in a hurry! Ive never had a persimmon, looks tasty though!! I usually eat a snack (aka dessert) before bed so I dont wake up hungry and angry!

  17. I’m not in on the Quest Bar party, unfortunately. They aren’t vegan so I don’t eat them.. but they look and sound delicious!

  18. Tara says:

I have been persimmon crazy lately! Like, I have eaten 4 already and it’s only Wednesday. ๐Ÿ™‚ Luckily they are cheap and in season, or else I would have a not-as-tasty and expensive habit.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ahhhh, a fellow persimmon lover!! ๐Ÿ˜€ I just can’t seem to get enough of the sweet little beauties lately! Luckily I have plenty from a Costco pack I scored a couple weekends ago!

  19. I gotta give quest bars another go! I didn’t like the cinnamon roll when I tried it but maybe another flavor will do! And your cottage cheese thang looks yummy ๐Ÿ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I didn’t like my first (or second) cinnamon roll either. I’ve noticed over the last few months that it depends on the bar….I stick firmly by the touch test now. If it’s hard as a rock in the package, then it will taste like air, but if it gives and you can kinda bend it, then it’s a good one! ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Let’s not talk about my Quest bar stash. Seriously. No shame baby! I’ve got my dad and brother addicted to them as well.

I’m just getting into different cinnamons and I admit, it’s fun. I have 3 cinnamon shakers as we speak er type, sitting on my kitchen counter. hehe.

I’ve never had a persimmon! How do you pick a good one? Teach me of wise ginger. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Oh yeah, guilty as charged for getting the man-friend in on my addiction! I swear he can’t go more than a few days without one!

When it comes to persimmons, you want one that is a dark color orange. With Fuyu’s (short and squatty like the one in my pic), you can eat them like an apple, but with Hachiya’s (which look more like a Roma tomato), you have to wait until they are SUPER ripe…like to the point where you could stick your finger through it…then you cut them in half and scoop out the “jelly” inside! You can do that with a Fuyu too, but it takes FOREVER!!

  21. Popcorn is one of my favorite things ever. I can eat it, and eat it, and eat it, and…well, you catch my drift! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  22. Those warm cinnamon apples made me drool everywhere!

  23. Oh my gosh–I MUST make that spinach/egg puff thing! Thank YOU!

And I gotta try a quest bar stat!:)

  24. No I generally sleep right through. I always think I must eat too much at night as I donโ€™t always wake up really hungry straight away.

I only tried Persimmonโ€™s this year but love them too, I just havenโ€™t seen them around to buy them otherwise I would snack on them too.

Youโ€™ve made me want to try a Quest bar again, as I said my last experience was lacklustre at best.

I canโ€™t say Nick has ever thrown fruit at me but if he got the idea Iโ€™m sure he would ๐Ÿ˜‰

Now youโ€™ve got Christmas songs in my head.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ha! That’s what you get you Little Mermaid inceptionist! ๐Ÿ˜›

Definitely give Quest another shot…it took me a few tries before I found some good ones. The trick is to make sure they’re not super hard…the softer they are at room temperature, the tastier they’ll be! ๐Ÿ˜€

  25. Not only do I not get hungry in the middle of the night, but I generally can’t eat anything for at least a couple of hours. My stomach would revolt. The Hubby’s like you though; he must eat something right away.

I’ve never had a Quest bar. I’m so behind the times.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Whatever, you know you wouldn’t eat one if you had it! It’s okay though…I don’t hold it against you. At least I know you’d never turn down butter, cheese, or some X-rated yolkporn! But we DO need to see about getting more pancakes in your life! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. Ugh I hate waking up in the middle of the night hungry! It’s worse than waking up and having to pee because instead of just going down the hallway to the bathroom, I have to go ALL the way downstairs to the kitchen!!! And after I wake up hungry, I always have the hardest time falling asleep again. I’ve gotten into the habit lately of eating TOO much before bed to try to avoid that, and sometimes I wake up full now haha. I can’t win either way. ๐Ÿ˜›

  27. I had my first a persimmon today! So delish!

  28. I was giving my erythritol-sensitive tummy a break from Quest bars for a little, but last week I said screw it and went out and stocked up on my favorites. So they are back in my evening snack rotation and it feels oh so good.

  30. Nothing wrong with relying on bars for a quick pinch- and compared to some other gunk out there- a wise choice! how GOOD is that cinnamon- it was one of the only things I bought from Costco and so worth it- you can actually taste the cinnamon (unlike all the other fake cinnamons, five times the price, no taste whatsoever)…or maybe it has to do with the giant container. One shake = 5 tbs.

Stupid island burger…its times like that you wish they WOULD falsely advertise their products and give you something not verbatim.
