Birthday Confessions

Birthday Biscuit

I’ll take a birthday biscuit over cake any day!

I knew I wanted to keep things low-key for my birthday so when my mom asked what I would like her to make for us for lunch on Saturday, I resorted to my list of childhood favorites. Since I’ve already done pot roast and chicken pot pie in years past, I decided this year, I would request my ALL time favorite…BREAKFAST!

Birthday Brunch

I CLEANED my plate and then used another half a biscuit to lap up the yolk from my sister’s plate…can you BELIEVE she was gonna let that go to waste?!

Every Sunday when I was little, my mom would make a big breakfast spread…eggs, bacon or sausage, fried potatoes, fruit, and biscuits with anything you could want to top them with and on Saturday afternoon, I got JUST THAT…and it was just as good as I remembered! Actually, it was better because we had MAPLE bacon and booze!

Birthday Bubbly

I cracked opened a bottle of champagne at 11:30am…and umm, squealed like a school girl when I popped the cork on the front porch and watched it soar across the yard.

Seriously? Mimosas! How did I ever eat breakfast without them! Thank you Meghan for being such a bad influence! πŸ˜‰ After we ate, it was time for presents!

Birthday Basket

I got a bowl of produce for my birthday…and I LOVED it!

Brussels sprouts (which I’ve actually been hunting for since Thanksgiving), the cutest little mini peppers, two ears of corn, an avocado, an apple, a persimmon, a quince (never tried before!), a butternut squash, and the bottom of the bowl was filled with sweet potatoes and mixed nuts…my parents totally spoiled me! Oh and I couldn’t help but smile when my mom told me that my dad picked the bowl out himself and was totally stressing out about whether I would like it or not! Too cute, right? Obviously I love it…especially since I think it looks a lot like Chelsea’s that I’ve been lusting over for a while!

Birthday Scarf

I lived in this scarf ALL weekend!

My sister found this wonderfully soft and incredibly HUGE infinity scarf at Old Navy. It’s not a color I would normally pick out for myself, but seriously, I am in LOVE with it and I already want to go and see if I can find some gloves to match! She also got me a cute little hoop for my nose! What do you think? Can I pull off the hippie look? πŸ˜‰

After hanging with my family for most of the evening, the man-friend and I traveled back to Nashville. I decided on Thai for dinner and while the meal really wasn’t NEAR as good as last time, we still had a great time and…

Birthday Tea

I was in my PJ’s with tea in hand by 8:30pm.

We cuddled on the couch for the rest of the night watching Netflix and seriously, I couldn’t have been happier…well, until the next morning when he took me to Costco to pick up my present!

Birthday Food Processor

I turned down a Vitamix for a food processor.

Ok, ok, OKAY!! I know I’m probably committing some sort of cardinal food blogger sin, but honestly, I just don’t feel like it would’ve been worth it for him to spend that much on a blender that I don’t necessarily need. You see, I already grind my own flours with my wanna-be Magic Bullet and really, I can count on one hand the number of times I made a smoothie this year soooo….

BUT as I stood there in front of the food processor, reading all of the stats, pointing out that it was pretty cool that it came with a dough hook, but still hemming and hawing over it, I still just couldn’t pull the trigger. So he rolls our cart up to the display, bumps the box on the top with his shoulder and after we watched it slide down his arm and into the cart, he says, “Omg, would you look at that! Well, it’s too heavy to pull out of there so I guess it’s coming home with us, huh?”

*Insert as many “awwww’s” as you’d like here* πŸ˜‰

After that, we walked around the store, picking up some samples, and finding things for Christmas gifts for his family when I spotted something I didn’t have to think one minute about buying…

Divergent Trilogy

I bought MYSELF a present for my birthday.

This is actually one of the THREE things I’ve bought over the last couple of days…umm yeah, hi! πŸ˜‰Β The rest of the night was spent shopping at two of our favorite stores, Marshall’s and World Market, resting our legs while sipping chai lattes at a local bookstore, and meeting up with some friends for dinner.

Mustache Selfie

This year marks a new beginning in my aging process.Β

Twenty-nine was just a bit too close to thirty for my liking so I’ve decided that I am now twenty-eight again…and next year I will be twenty-seven. But no matter how YOUNG I get, I’llΒ never resist an opportunity for a good selfie! Or three as this post goes to prove!

Notice the scarf! πŸ˜‰

Oh and I guess I should also confess to not even THINKING about blogging this weekend…which is why I’m “telling it all” on a MONDAY! Sorry I’m not sorry, but for the first time in a long time, I was just enjoying the moments and having FUN and it was EXACTLY what I needed!

But I do want to say a BIG thank you to everyone who sent me birthday wishes on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, texts, and phone calls…you all seriously know how to make a girl feel loved! πŸ™‚Β

Um, I think it’s safe to say your dad wins the Cutest Dad award for the year. Please let him know he did a fabulousss job picking out a stunning fruit bowl. Seriously, he’s so precious & now I want to meet him.

Confession: I thought you said you had Maple Bacon Booze and I got a bit giddy.. then I reread it and saw they were 2 difernet things. Bummer! Ha Ha

I know I already told you on fb, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY DARLING!!

    • OMG I read exactly the same thing! And I was like ‘now THAT is strange….and good?` haha πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! I will be sure to do JUST that when I see him next! He’s had a hard time in the past expressing emotion with us girls, but you can definitely see it in his gift-giving…he always wants things to be just right! In fact, we spent about 30 minutes on the phone tonight talking about what would be the best thing for him to give my mom! πŸ™‚

And wow!! Maple bacon booze? Where do I sign up for some of that?! Dude, I would totally drink with/put that stuff on everything! Lol

  2. Purelytwins says:

    Happy birthday sweetie!!

  3. That sounds like such a wonderful birthday, Heather!! And that’s so cute that your dad picked out that bowl πŸ™‚ Aww. And that food processor!!! You’re going to love it, I’m sure! I know a Vitamix isn’t for everyone, so you’re forgiven πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks, Liz! Now would you please explain that to Laura! πŸ˜‰ Haha! I’m so excited to have a big food processor again…the one I’ve been working with for the last year or so is only a 4 cupper so it’s hard to do anything unless I break it up into small batches…and to be honest, I’m just too lazy for that! Lol

  4. Awwwwwwwwwwwww!!!

Happy belated you beauty you! I think mimosas should be an everyday thing. And I totally agree on the food processor over the vitamix! Love my FP! Though I wouldn’t complain if somebody wanted to get me a vitamix πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you, Davida!! I have to say I agree with you on the mimosas…I was totally spying the bottle of champagne in my fridge when I woke up today! Haha! And yeah, I think a food processor is just so much more versatile, but if a Vita rep contacted me tomorrow and wanted to give me a free one to try to change my opinion, I definitely wouldn’t fight them! πŸ˜‰

  5. Happy happy belated birthday giiiiirl!!!! I’m so happy you had such a fantastic, joy-filled and relaxing day! And I am soooooo jealous of your FP…..you know I killed mine just a few weeks ago and I fear that Sandro doesn’t get my hints to buy me a new one. I might have to stick a fake Santa note on his pillow……

    • kissmybroccoli says:

      Aww, thanks, lady! xoxo

And IF Sandro doesn’t get the hints, then you may need to suggest he see an eye doctor, because obviously he’s completely BLIND! Haha!

  6. Awwr lady! Lookit your beautiful and adorable self! Happy belated birthday to ya πŸ˜€ I love that you got to enjoy the exact birthday you wanted, and I love that it was low-key. I used to be all about the crazy birthday celebrations, but the older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve just wanted to enjoy some quiet time with family and close friends. And good choice with going with a food processor over a Vitamix. I have one of those super blenders, but honestly… I can’t even remember the last time I used it. I use my Magic Bullet on the regular, but the Vita hardly ever gets pulled out because of how much of a pain it is to clean. And thank you for reminding me that I could seriously use a good food processor… I still haven’t bought my own since moving out, and those things are just magic.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Awww, Amandaaaaaaaaa! You’re making me blush, girlie!! Thank you! <3 And yeah, it might just be because I have a December birthday and I'm a total pansy when it comes to the cold, but I've always preferred having something more low-key...or at the most, a bunch of friends/family over at the house!

Those were my exact thoughts when the man-friend suggested the Vita! At first, all I could see was stars, but then I just didn't think it would be worth it when I can basically use my little single use blender for most everything. I've been without a large food processor for over a year now though and I can definitely tell you that this bad boy will be put to GOOD use! πŸ˜€

  7. Chrystal M. says:

    Happy belated birthday!

Gosh I remember those mom-made super-duper country large Sunday breakfasts. Now I am the one doing them for the hubs and kiddo. Only, not quite so large. lol

Looks like a perfectly wonderful weekend and love that you got a produce basket for a present. That is so awesome!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you, Chrystal! Sunday breakfasts are probably one of the biggest things I miss from being a kid…well, that and being able to run around all day without a care in the world! πŸ˜‰

  8. Glad to hear that you had a fantastic birthday love! So between your dad and the man-friend, you have a lot of adorable guys around!
I would probably go with a food processor too, to be honest…I only ever use my blender for smoothies, so my little single serve blender does the job just fine. But a food processor…there would be lots of hummus, nut butters, and soups being made around here!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Yeah, I think I might keep them both…at least until after Christmas! πŸ˜‰

Glad to know I’m not the only one who feels that way about the blender…I just think a food processor is so much more versatile! And it’s been over a year since I’ve had a good-sized one in my kitchen! Can’t wait to bust it out soon!

  9. Happy Birthday again!!! I love that you kicked it off with mimosas. It’s the only way to go. πŸ™‚

P.S. I am judging you over the Vitamix thing.

  10. Happy late birthday! I will be 29 next month but might just be 28 again, like yourself πŸ˜‰ And mimosas, I agree – how did I ever eat breakfast without them?!

  11. I’m loving that scarf. I’m now kicking myself that I didn’t make it into Old Navy when I was out Christmas shopping, well maybe next weekend. Looks like a great b-day and you are going to love that food processor!

  12. betty says:

happy birthday again!!! is your nose pierced? or is that a fake hoop!?? either way.. you can def pull it off πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thanks, babe! Yep, my nose is pierced, but I usually wear a small stud so you can’t really see it unless the light hits it just right! Thank you…it took me all weekend to get used to the hoop, but it’s really starting to grow on me!

  13. That sounds like a great birthday!!! That breakfast looks awesome, love the little candle in the biscuit. I do special “birthday” breakfasts for my kiddos on their days, I hope they remember them when they’re adults.

And ohh crap, no one told me I should be counting BACKWARDS! So next year I’ll be 31 instead of 32? Is this how it works? Why didn’t anyone tell me! πŸ˜‰

and once again, happy birthday sweet lady! Enjoy your processor! (good job man friend!) I have a vitamix and would love a food processor because I’m addicted to kitchen gadgets. πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah! Backwards is totally the way to go! I’m figuring once I hit 18 again, I’ll start my way back up…it’ll be like yo-yo dieting aging! πŸ˜‰

That’s awesome that your kids get special birthday breakfasts! And if they are the children of a foodie like you, they will most definitely remember them!

  14. Emily says:

Aw, YAY! Happy [belated] Birthday! It looks like it was perfect.
Sometimes low-key is the way to go. And you’re going to love the Divergent series! I read all three books in a matter of weeks. (:

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Thank you, Emily!! It was pretty great! And I can’t believe how many great things I’ve heard about this series…I haven’t started it just yet since I’m still working on finishing up my last book, but I can’t wait! Definitely want to read it before the movie comes out!

  15. OMG I always ask Steve to take me for Thai on my birthday!
Yay on the new food processor! You HAVE to text me pictures of things you wizz up!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Well, I should’ve asked him to take me back to the place he took us that one night, but instead we decided to try a new place. We’ve been there for sushi and they’re just “ok” but they also serve Thai food so we got excited…definitely not the best, but we made the most of it!

And pictures are for sure coming you way! πŸ˜‰

  16. this makes me so happy πŸ˜€ i absolutely love that you got produce for your birthday πŸ˜€ i love love love low key birthdays babe! my style for sure

  17. Wasted yolk is most definitely not an option. I’m glad you made sure it didn’t go to waste!

  18. That bowl of produce looks fabulous! haha! I hope you had a great birthday πŸ™‚

  19. You’re gonna be a regular Benjamin Button! Or, should I say Heather Button? I love that scarf! Infinity scarves are great. That reminds me of a few weeks ago when an older woman came into Gymboree (where I work part time) and asked if we had any children’s “eternity” scarves. I kindly said no and chuckled after she left.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Eternity…honestly, that totally sounds like something I would mix up! Lol And I was thinking about the Benjamin Button thing the other day too…I’m thinking once I hit 18, I’ll work my way back up…hmm, so I guess it’ll be like yo-yo dieting aging! πŸ˜‰

  20. Happy belated Birthday Heather!!!! I just turned 30 in August, but I’m thinking I’ll take a year off too! πŸ˜‰ I love your birthday breakfast of choice and the fact that you got produce as a present is just SO awesome! Your dad did a darn good job on the bowl too…now I want one!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thanks Holly! πŸ™‚ And yes, I stand behind the whole aging backwards thing…I’ve never felt more spry! πŸ˜‰ Haha! Oh and just FYI, I’m pretty sure he found the bowl at Walmart!

  21. Sarah Pie says:

That sounds like a beautiful birthday weekend! I mean birthday biscuits?! How great is that πŸ™‚ It looks like you got some great presents from everyone, including yourself (those books are totally on my to-read list before the movie comes out!)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, I think it’s safe to say I got good and spoiled this year! And I’ve heard so much about the books, but after I saw the preview for the movie this weekend, I just new I had to read them before I see it!

  22. Aww happy birthday! That breakfast looks awesome and what a cute idea with the candle! Enjoy yourself Heather you are awesome and deserve it πŸ™‚ <3

  23. Haha. The little candle in your biscuit is adorable! (For some reason that is sounding to me like an incredibly strange way of announcing a pregnancy… Bun in your oven… Candle in your biscuit? No? Is that just me? haha).

DIVERGENT. Those books just called to me! I’m still waiting to get the third until after school is over for the year because an incredible book + me + exams = no studying.

AWWWW….. what an awesome guy! Any big plans yet for what you’re going to be making us with your new kitchen tool?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Well I am most definitely NOT making any of those sort of announcements, that’s for sure! Haha! I thought the candle was a cute idea too…my dad rolled his eyes at my mom and me…whatevs! πŸ˜‰

I hear the last book is a killer! Kat (from Katalyst Health) said she was upset for weeks after she finished it! Eeeeek! 😯

Not quite sure what I’m making just yet, but I do have a few ideas for some new dips…and I’m definitely making a cauliflower crust pizza soon! The little food processor that I’ve been working with was nowhere near big enough for even a half a head of cauliflower…and I’m much too lazy to do it in batches! πŸ˜‰

  24. What an awesome sounding birthday weekend!! I am drooling over that breakfast your mum made you especially those biscuits!!

I am in love with that infinity scarf, I own A LOT of scarves but no infinity ones so you’ve made me want to check out Old Navy now to have a look at them.

I was thinking of getting a Vitamix but find it very hard too to justify the cost. I really need to just get a good food processor.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, food processors are so much more versatile…and a LOT easier to clean in my opinion! The scarf is fantastic! I have always loved infinity scarves but this is the first crochet kind that I’ve ever had…so warm and comfy!

  25. Kat says:

DONT read that last book!!! oh my gosh you will die from the feels, Im telling you right now. That writer is beyond talented and I was so lost in her world, but that 3rd book had me pitching a fit! Just ask my hubby, I was inconsolable for the entire night…
And Im actually an old lady, so I crochet my own scarves πŸ™‚ I still love fabric scarves, but there’s something so comfy about a chunky crochet scarf that I adore!
And let me just tell you, your man sounds like a keeper πŸ˜‰ My hubby saved up for an entire year and surprised me with a Vita for my bday a few years back. He’s kind of amazing like that <3

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh great! Good to know I’ll probably be cursing the author by the end of it and lopping her right in with Nicholas Sparks! I was just telling the man-friend the other day about how I can’t read any of his books because he’s always killing off my favorite characters! Lol

Aggh, I wish so much that I could crochet! I’ve tried to learn a few times, but I’ve never really stuck with it long enough. I always get so frustrated that I end up with loops so tight that I can’t get the hook back in them! 😯

And yeah, definitely thinking I’ll keep the man-friend around a little longer…at least until after Christmas! πŸ˜‰

  26. Very happy to hear you had such a marvelous b-day!!! πŸ™‚
I love how your family spoiled you with breakfast food & the fruit bowl, too cute! Oh, & the man friend’s contribution – he’s a keeper!

  27. Mmm yes breakfast sounds like a perfect birthday meal to me! Especially one involving bacon and breakfast sausages. And yay, I’m so glad you got yourself a Chelsea bowl! Love that you family filled with with produce for you.

You know what? I would totally choose a food processor over a VitaMix any day too. Food processors are just so much more versatile! I actually have a similar one to yours, but I think mine is 12 cups. You’re going to love yours. πŸ˜€

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh I know! I used to have an 11 cupper before, but it died about a year ago. I got a combo blender/food processor to replace it, but didn’t think about the small size of the food processor attachment (only around 4 cups)…so it’s been hard to do anything more than a few dips, nut butters, and of course, pesto! I’m excited to get in the kitchen with this one and whip up some good stuff…it’s been too long since I’ve made a cauliflower crust pizza so I might just have to start with that! πŸ™‚

  28. SUCH a KMB present- love it. So glad you had a great birthday filled with amazing people and now with a brand spanking new food processor which (selfishly) I cannot wait for you to use (and create more amazing recipes ;)) I saw the vitamix at Costco on the weekend and as sexy as it was, the price just wasn’t worth it. I could buy 1/4 of a ticket of America with it!

    Happy 18th birthday again πŸ˜‰

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Well hopefully I’ll be able to bust it out pretty soon…I’ve already been thinking of a few new dip ideas! πŸ˜‰ And honestly, before I even had a blender, I would use my food processor to make smoothies and it always did the trick! I just don’t see paying half my mortgage for some fancy schmancy one…I mean, for that price, it better come with a pack of cocktail umbrellas and a cabana boy named Franco! Lol

      18…ha, love it! Thanks sweets!

  29. Maria says:

Such a perfect birthday! Breakfast foods are my favorite as well! Now I want some homefries and a side of scrambled eggs πŸ™‚

Your scarf is adorable! I may have put it on my Christmas List!

    Also…HAPPY FLIPPING BIRTHDAY!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you, Maria! I always forget how much I love having potatoes with my breakfast spread…and my mom makes them nice and crispy so it’s kinda like eating fries and potato chips at the same time!

I definitely recommend the scarf! It is SO cozy! I may or may not be thinking about getting another one in a different color! πŸ˜‰

  30. Happy, Happy birthday to you! It looks like you had a great birthday, and Mimosa’s are definitely a must on your special day. Cupcake champs is a definite favorite of mine! I just can’t see spending that much on a blender, so I think you made the right choice. πŸ™‚

  32. Lisa says:

Okay, so late but HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEEK!!!!!
It sounds like your birthday was absolute perfection so that’s amazing!
I do love my vitamix, but your food processor looks pretty darn amazing and obviously a good choice if you’re not big into smoothies (unlike myself). And that blue scarf looks amazing on you, it’s seriously an amazing color for your hair and complexion! Buy more things that color asap:)

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Aww, thank you, Lisa! I think I will…I’ve actually never worn this color before but I’m totally in love with it now!

  33. I’m glad to see my influence has rubbed off on you. A little booze in the a.m. can be a really good thing. It sounds like you had a perfect birthday and I love the way the Man Friend got your gift. Very bonus points worthy and perhaps a little something extra special. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. I do not own a Vitamix, and I love my food processor so you’ll get no judgment from me.
Oh and you can totally pull off the hippy look. You just need one random braid in your hair and you’ll be set.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ahhh, the braid! How could I have forgotten such a detail! And yes, there was plenty of somethings special for the man-friend! He must’ve slipped something in my mimosa! πŸ˜‰

Funny, I was just sitting here getting caught up responding to comments and thinking about you!
