Tortilla Tuesday: A Tale of Food Fixation

I have a very addictive personality.

Whether it’s shirking all responsibilities in order to finish reading my latest book series, watching ALL the episodes of a new favorite show in one day, or listening to a song on repeat…for the FIFTH time in a row, I can’t help myself. When I find something I love, I basically have to breathe it.

Same thing goes for food…ok, maybe not so much as that would cause aspiration, sepsis, and possibly death. Ohhh, medical nerd alert! πŸ˜‰Β But seriously, you guys know I’m no stranger to what I like to refer to as my “food phases”…well, this year, I’m starting with a new one…

TORTILLAS!! πŸ˜€

Turkey & Cheese Wrap with Potatoes and Kabocha

The {insanely} delicious turkey wrap from my last WIAW post was only the beginning.

There have been tortillas for breakfast…

Breakfast Banana Wrap

Wrapped up with vanilla Greek yogurt, banana, and PB&J Granola!

Tortillas for lunch…

Tortilla Quesadilla 2

Turkey, cheddar, and apple quesadilla!

Tortilla Quesadilla 1

Topped with fig jam post pic…which brings back memories of ANOTHER phase of mine!

And tortillas for DINNER…

Tortilla Pizza 1

And yeah, I’m basically a FREAKING GENIUS for this combo…

Tortilla Pizza 2

Caramelized onion and fig dip as a base (yes, a YEAR later and I’m still hoarding the last few spoonfuls), topped with parmesan cheese, mushrooms, onions, turkey, and parsley…HOLEEEEEEY YUM!

All I can say is I’m glad I “rescued” these babies from the man-friend’s house a couple of weeks ago. To think, he was gonna let something as small as a four-month-old expiration date keep him from such deliciousness. But you know what that means…

Tortillas

More for ME! πŸ˜†

What is your FAVORITE way to eat tortillas?

What was/is your latest food phase?

  1. I go through the same things with food, I mean at least you make your tortilla addiction interesting. I love the combos you have. I am lately on a guacamole kick, expect for me that means basically eating it by the spoonful. Healthy fats right?

  2. I love tortillas! Food for Life makes the best GF brown rice ones πŸ™‚ But right now my food obsession is the purple sweet potato!

  3. I completely have an addictive personality too! I go through major food phases and then can’t even look at that food after I’ve totally overdone it! Just bought some brown rice tortillas so I may have to start a new addiction…

  4. I just commented yesterday to someone how I don’t use tortillas other than the traditional way. I love the different ideas!! I adore jalapeΓ±o gorillas..just a touch a spicy goes a long way in my book! πŸ™‚

  5. Lucie says:

Oh I am such a food phase person…..it’s ridiculous!! But I can definitely say that tortillas is an addiction for me too. I LOVE that breakfast creation you made – drooling!!
I normally just wrap all my meals into a tortilla. If it is fish, chicken, or any deli meat with hummus and salad for savory versions, or cinnamon eggwhites, chocolatized quark and berries for a sweet one – it’s always a winner!

  6. Aparna B. says:

YuuuMAY. I love tortillas. I’m trying not to eat too many carbs, but you’ve just opened my eyes to these lo-carb ones! My favorite way to eat tortillas is to cut them up and bake them to make chips. Beats the oily bagged kind any day! Or making quesadillas. Endless possibilities!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah! That’s one of my favorite ways too…great dipped in hummus! You should try the low carb ones from Trader Joes…those are the ones I normally buy and they’re great!

  7. My latest food phase was eggs and spinach for breakfast every single day. It was getting a littttttle ridiculous so I want to try to switch it up a bit! Tortillas are something I often buy and then neglect. I wish I enjoyed them more! I love a wrap every now and again but I find that they get dry before I use them all up.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Have you tried freezing them? Just slip a piece of wax paper or aluminum foil between each one so they don’t stick together….that’s what I do when I’m NOT food phasing my way through them! πŸ˜‰

  8. Yeah, I really need to go buy some tortillas. I haven’t had a tortilla wrap in forever (not counting burritos)! As a kid, my mom used to put salami and cream cheese in tortillas and wrap ’em up for us… Can you tell that my dad is the chef in the family? Mama Snacks isn’t so keen on the whole cooking thing.

My latest food phase is… um… eating out of tupperware? Does that count?

P.S. I LOVED the Broccoli Bomb this morning. It absolutely made my day.

  9. Ohh yum tortillas!! But you have to tell us what kind you use because not all tortillas are created the same!! πŸ˜‰

We got new tortillas at the cafe that apparently blow up like a balloon in our 500 degree ovens unless you poke holes in them. Amanda did not know this. Good news though, I got to eat the “mess-up” of the inflated quesadilla!! πŸ™‚

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! I remember seeing that on your Instagram! These actually tried to do that on me with the pizza, but luckily I was able to “save it”! This brand of tortillas was just ok, but I usually get the low-carb ones from Trader Joes or Flatout Light wraps!

  10. Lyric says:

My favourite way to eat tortillas is in wraps! Especially buffalo or caesar chicken wraps. SO good. My latest and greets for phase is green smoothies; and I’m not complaining. Actually Im kinda hoping this one sticks!

  11. All of your tortilla meals look good! I went through a phase where I ate at least one quesadilla every day. This post makes me want to pick up some tortillas next time I go to the grocery store.

  12. That first paragraph = me. I have such an addictive personality! I can’t even stop chewing my nails, so my rule is to never ever start smoking because I know I would never ever stop. Same goes for food/books/movies/shows/etc hahaha

  13. Tara says:

That turkey/cheddar/apple quesadilla is giving me ideas for lunch today!

  14. I’m a food phaser too. Not tortillas. Sadly, I don’t think I like them. I seriously could care less about them (though your breakfast banana/yo/granola wrap looks mighty fine). My latest phase is “my breakfast run, phase 2”. After doing that breakfast challenge in November, eating a different breakfast every day…well I think I went into shock. I have been eating the SAME breakfast every day since Dec 1 (give or take 4 stray ones from being out of town). Egg white oats with shredded carrots cooked in, cinnamon and vanilla. Yup, I think I’m going from shock to sepsis.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Haha! Ohhh, that reminds me…I want to get the recipe you’re using for your chia pudding! I think I’m up for a little experimentation this weekend! πŸ˜‰

  15. So, you’ve successfully gotten me craving quesadillas! I’m not particularly creative with tortillas – I only tend to use them for tacos or fajitas. I’m thinking I need some enchiladas in my life soon though! And the breakfast wrap is brilliant, by the way.

  16. Those banana tortillas look ah-maze-inggggggggggggg! And I love the combination of turkey, cheese and apple.

My current food phase? Well I am trying to break my breakfast bake addiction and trying to shake up my breakfasts haha. But breakfast bakes are definitely one obsession – and rice paper rolls are the other obsession.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

It’s hard to break away from a food phase…especially when it’s something that can be changed up so easily…it never really FEELS like you’re eating the same thing every day! ONE of these days I’ll get around to making one of your “infamous” breakfast bakes…probably for dinner since I’m horrible at making the time to “create” something in the morning! Haha!

      • Don’t worry, I never have time and I’m always too lazy to make something in the morning – that’s why I make up big batches of breakfast bakes and then freeze them for quick breakfast. My lazy self is in heaven because I just defrost them in the fridge overnight and then pop on toppings in the morning!

        • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, you are a frickin’ GENIUS!!! I know you had said you took them down from the freezer, but HELLO! I just realized that means that you FROZE them, duh!! Haha! Ok, I can totally get on board that train! As soon as I find my kitchen motivation, a breakfast bake is most definitely happening! πŸ˜€

  17. Courtney says:

Ohhh that pizza looks so good. I pack lunch for school everyday, and a staple of mine is egg salad wrapped in a tortilla. Speaking of eggs…. they are my latest food obsession. I eat eggs on a regular basis but right now I need them hard boiled.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh I know plenty about egg-sessions! πŸ˜‰ It’s been a while since I’ve gone through one, but when I do, I’ve GOT to have a runny yolk!

  18. I go through tortilla phases too. Once I ate tortilla pizzas at every meal. Right now I’m loving them panini-style. I press ’em in my George Foreman. In fact, I’m going to do that for dinner!

  19. Right now I’m in a soup phase – I’ve been making big batches of soup on the weekends to take for weekday lunches. It’s so nice to have something hot in the middle of the day!

I like tortillas, but I don’t eat them that often. My favourite way to eat them is stuffed with turkey, avocado, tomatoes, sprouts, and mustard. That quesadilla looks killer though – turkey, cheese, and apple is such a good combination!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh, the best! And you HAVE to know I thought of you when I added the fig jam! Haha!

I can’t believe I haven’t thought to dig out some of my soups from the freezer! I’ve got cauliflower AND pumpkin chili in there waiting for me!

  20. Tortillas have yet to make much of an appearance in my life. For the record: I -think- I’d like them. If we could find any that don’t have ingredient lists longer than my arm and listing things that sound more like something mixed in a chemistry lab than actual food, that is.
My current food phase is wrapping up whatever I feel like eating in phyllo dough, baking it and calling it a pastry. Flaky, crispy – yes, please.
“To think, he was gonna let something as small as a four-month-old expiration date keep him from such deliciousness” – you and me, both, girl. People need to relax and trust their own senses again. Here’s to being living proof that these dates are mere suggestions – or that we have stomaches of steel ;).

  21. Sarah Pie says:

Ungh aspiration leads to suctioning and yeah… let’s just not talk about that…

Moving on from things that make me want to lose my lunch, I have to say I’m loving everything that you have stuffed into your tortillas. I’d be lost for lunches without my favorite wraps, but I’m thinking I may have to give your breakfast version a try ASAP.

  22. I’ve been having greek yoghurt with peanut butter and honey mixed in…obsessed! I sometimes mix it up and use almond butter and jam instead.

I am the same as you I get fixated on a food and then have it over and over. All your tortilla combos look great!

  24. Kat says:

    yesssssss
You just gave me a foodgasm. Wow, it is way to early in the AM for me to be commenting on blogs.
Anyway, Im addicted to lavash wraps right now!! Ive been using them in every way that you’ve used tortillas, but there is just something soo…different about them! I can’t put my finger on it, but man Im addicted to them!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

What do you mean “addicted to them right now”?? Girl, you’ve had a full-on obsession with those things for going on a year now, right? πŸ˜‰ Hey, you know what you like! And um yeah, I’m kinda feeling like a stud(ette?) right now giving you a morning foodgasm and all! Bahaha!

  25. If you make it lool like a pizza or a quesadilla, then you can count me in, especially when you throw in cheese.
I scoff in the general direction of expiration dates. I’m sure they’re really just guidelines.

  26. Your combinations with tortillas look nicely… Once I too tried to make a wrapping. It was disgusting. I need definitely more skills πŸ˜‰ My passion right now – eggs. Earlier I ate only proteins, but it was worth adding a yolk – eggs simply began to shine! If I don’t eat them for breakfast, I eat them for dinner.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yeah, the yolk is where it’s AT!! And you just reminded me that it’s been over a WEEK since I’ve had an egg…this must change very VERY soon!

  27. Those wraps are my favorite! I love the granola and banana wrap, looks delicious as heckkkkkk!

  28. I go through food phases, too! If I really like something, then I have it almost everyday until I am sick of it. I went through a phase with P28 High Protein flat bread, making anything with those wraps for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My latest phase is oatmeal in the morning and mixing all kinds of different things into it.

I love tortillas and I have to say your breakfast tortilla wraps look SO good! I’ll have to bust out the flat bread again and make a breakfast wrap tomorrow!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Omg, YES! I went through a phase with the P28 wraps too! Which was funny, because they sat untouched in my freezer for MONTHS before that…and now they’re all gone and I’m hoarding the bread! Lol!

I’ve seriously been craving oatmeal like crazy lately (probably due to the cold weather) but haven’t gotten around to making it. I keep telling myself it takes “too long” and instead fix a bowl of cereal! Ha!

  29. You’re so funny. I’m the same way about expirations. Expir-what’s more like suggestions right?!

My husband would SO appreciate this post, damn that man loves wrapping shit in tortillas. I’m loving the La Tortilla Factory low carb ones, have you tried those?!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ohhh, no I haven’t! I’d never tried this brand before “stealing” them from the man-friend…they’re just alright, but I usually get the low-carb ones from Trader Joes. It’d be nice to find some that I don’t have to make a special trip to Nashville for though. Where do you normally buy them?

      • I find em at Meijers, although you may be too south of me for a Meijers? I think KY is as south as they go…. although my walfart just started carrying the small ones!

Also, netrition sells them online πŸ˜€

        • kissmybroccoli says:

Yup, never heard of a MaaaaayJEERS? Seriously, what kind of name for a store IS that?! Guess I’ll be stalking Wally World soon! Thanks lady! πŸ˜€

  30. Julie says:

I’m shocked those tortillas didn’t go bad! What kinds of tortillas do you usually buy?

    • kissmybroccoli says:

I’m sure they were frozen at some point. The man-friend accidentally brought them back from his mom’s house a couple of weeks ago. I really like the low carb ones from Trader Joes or Flatout wraps!

  31. I love using tortillas for breakfast burritos filled with fat free cream cheese, spinach, turkey, a fried egg,and tomato. Yum. Or homemade poptarts. Or homemade pizzas. Or tacos and burritos. πŸ˜‰

    They are so versatile!

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Oh yes! I love eggs and cream cheese together! And I’ve totally been meaning to jump on that homemade poptart train, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet…definitely need to remember that when I get my next bag of tortillas!

  32. sweet mother almighty. more tortillas! You’re doing more to tortillas than my little half Mexican heart could ever dream of. I do the breakfast burritos, regular burrtios, enchiladas etc etc, but never thought about turning them into pizzas or sweet breakfast carriers. genius!

  33. Oh my gee.

    1. The photos 2. The food. 3. Both of them. ARGH!

Food phases- It probably comes as no surprise but pancakes. Seriously, MUST be eaten once a day, and seeing as I have been cleaning out my fridge/freezer, being creative with them has been half the…fun? I wish tortillas were more popular here. We have this brand called mountain bread wraps. When you open them up, they tear immediately. Fail Whale.

    • kissmybroccoli says:

Ugh, I hate flimsy fragile wraps! Any time I’ve ever tried brown rice wraps, they always do that…like, what’s the point?!

Oh I remember the pancake-a-day days of my past…don’t worry, you will soon grow tired of them as even the pancake queen can attest to that! πŸ˜‰
