Thoughts on Dieting PTSD

Hello, friends!

I promised you guys a post on my thoughts of the 21-Day SP Cleanse I did last month and well, it looks like I’ve finally found a way to string all those thoughts all together. First off, I just want to say that I am not making light of post-traumatic stress disorder. I mean that title in the most serious way possible. But before I get to that, let’s back up a bit…oh and I’ll just warn you, this post maybe be a little TMI in some parts. 😯

I started the detox completely level-headed with a promise to listen to my body and give it all up if I started to feel it was too restrictive. In the nine days that I was cleansing, there were some ups and downs…mostly due to the incredible amount of bloating that I experienced from the overabundance of vegetables, but I never thought I felt deprived.

Salad

I’ve known for a while that my body doesn’t process fiber like everyone else. Even after experimenting with the types of fiber I consume and being sure to stay hydrated, I’ve never been what some would call “regular”. I thought with the complete body reset that this cleanse boasted, that somehow things would be different…but they weren’t. In the week and a half, I had maybe two “normal” bowel movements. On the night of day four, bloated to the point of looking six months pregnant, I decided I would throw in the towel in the morning, but for some odd reason, I woke up feeling amazing…with absolutely no bloat. Still not sure about that one. Maybe the fiber fairies came in my sleep? 😉

Anywho…I went for the NEXT four days feeling excited about food. The creative juices were flowing through me. I was coming up with new food combos. I was rediscovering old foodie flames. But then the bloat came back.

Womp womp.

Eggs & Toast

So that’s when I said “fuck it”, came home from work, and scrambled up some eggs with toast because I felt like it was just going to be an endless (and painful) cycle…and well, let’s face it, I was pretty sick of carrying around an air freshener in my back pocket, if you know what I mean!

Some things I learned:

1. My body does NOT tolerate green lentils…though I’m fine with red ones.
2. RAW cruciferous veggies do horrible things to my system.
3. Just like Laura, I feel that without an ample amount of protein, my energy is incredibly low.

But the biggest thing, and the thing I didn’t realize until just last week…

4. No matter the level of restriction, a cleanse/detox/anything that regards any food as “off-limits” brings back the dieting mentality in me.

Arman explained it really well in his recap of the Whole 30 program. Even though he too tailored it to his needs, he mentioned that it started to bring back some old thought patterns. It wasn’t until I did some journaling this past weekend, that I was able to see MY old thoughts that had been trickling back in…

Party Spread

Starting with the first night of “real” food post cleanse. At the bestie’s party where I was bombarded with so.many.CARBS! I had to have them…ALL! Of course, at the time, I wasn’t in tune with my body enough to know what was going on in my head. At the time, I chocked it up to my history with the big bad buffet, but in hindsight I see that I obviously was having a dieting flashback where the once “forbidden” food was now free game!

This happened again with my second trip to the Indian buffet last weekend. It was not just an “oops I overdid it” moment. After coming home from the restaurant, I polished off an entire bag of cinnamon sugar pita chips. It was not a proud moment for me. Just like they mentioned in Intuitive Eating, this was a classic moment of using food as punishment.

The previous week had been a series of bingeing…”get back on track”…and bingeing again. I guess now you can see what I meant by the teeter totter reference in yesterday’s post. I couldn’t see it at the time, but every time I binged, I allowed myself to feel guilt and every time I promised to “do better” the next day, I allowed myself to cling to that dieting mentality again.

After journaling and also getting some advice from a very dear blend, I’ve learned even more…

1. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve started labeling foods as good and bad again. If I’m going to get back to a place of balance and moderation, I HAVE to focus on the food and how it makes me feel…both physically and mentally.
2. I’m a lot more comfortable “indulging” when I’m with someone else who’s doing the same, but alone, the feeling is totally different.
3. I need to put more thought into preparing MEALS instead of throwing something together quickly that may or may not fill me up.
4. Eggs, eggs, EGGS!

Kabocha + Eggs + BBQ PB&J

Eating more savory…with a little sweet mixed in…is the BEST way to pull myself out of a funk and get me back to feeling normal again. Ok, so maybe that’s nothing NEW but c’mon, these babies are just too gorgeous not to share again!

No questions today, just your thoughts!
Though please be gentle…this post was not easy to publish. 😕

April: The Month of Teeter Tottering

Hey guys!!

Wow! Can you belieeeeeeeeve it? The last day of April!?! How in the HECK did that happen?

We’ve been pretty lucky this month and have actually had some fan-TASTIC weather, but it seems lately that Mother Nature’s been making up for lost time…tornadoes, flooding, hail?! Eeeep! She may be a crazy one, but I gotta give it to her, my fro curls have been ROCKING these last few days!

April Selfie

So being as it’s the last day of the month, I think you know what it’s time for! 😀

Current Book:

I’ve recently become really interested in essential oils so I borrowed a few books from a friend that are all about them! Yep, one more win for the hippie cult! I told you guys about the party at the bestie’s mama’s house earlier this month, but I didn’t mention that it was a Doterra party. I really just went to see my girl, hang with my mom, and let’s face it…there was wine…but I ended up being converted! I’ve dabbled in lavender and tea tree before, but I’m super excited to learn more…especially since I splurged and bought one of the starter kits!

Current Music:

This has been a GOOD month for music…thanks to my Spotify obsession and my yogi friends, my music library has basically doubled! And this remix of Tove Lo’s “Habits” has definitely been one of my favorite finds!

Current Guilty Pleasure:

Yoga. You guys!!! I just bought another unlimited month pass…and I still have my gym membership…and I can’t remember the last time I stepped foot in there! 😯

Current Nail Color:

I was rocking some pink for ohhhh about a day and a half…before it started to chip away and look like crap…even WITH a base and top coat! Ugh, that’s what I get for straying from my ever faithful Essie!

Current Entertainment:

Game of Thrones and LOTS of (free) Redbox rentals!

Game of Thrones SelfieAnd yeah, one of these days I’ll toughen up. I swear, they should call it GORE of Thrones!

Current Wish/Needs:

A massage! I’ve actually had one in the books THREE times this month, but had to cancel! But thanks to my VIP membership, that just means I get TWO next month…and I WILL make it happen!

Current Food:

April Food Collage - Avocado, Kabocha, Eggs

Avocado, kabocha, sweet potatoes, and eggs…oh thank God for the EGGS!!!

Current Drink:

Coffee. “Dory”Berry LaCroix.

…in that order. Please and thank you. 😉

Current Triumphs:

Further progressing in my yoga practice! I’m really getting a lot more comfortable pushing myself outside my comfort zone and surprising myself with what my body can do! Just yesterday, I got into a forearm head stand for a few seconds…before tumbling to the floor…in a VERY graceful way I might add! And I’m not even being sarcastic!

 Current Bane of Existence:

I promise to go into more detail tomorrow, but for now, I’m just going to say…myself. Or my mind actually. Life has been going really well for me lately…happiness is all around me…yet I’ve still found a way to work in some self-sabotage.

Current Blogger Crush:

Jenny from Peanut Butter & Jenny…I’ve been reading this girl off and on since I started blogging and besides being absolutely gorgeous (with a sense of style that I only DREAM of having!), she is indeed an old soul…wise beyond her years! This post from last week was EXACTLY what I needed.

Current Indulgence:

Coconut Butter

Since I was very limited on nut butters/spreads during the cleanse, I actually rediscovered my love for coconut butter, on just about anything, but mostly sweet potatoes!

Quest Bar #chunkporn

And porn…chunk porn! Would you LOOK at that baby?! Seriously though, I don’t know what’s gotten into me…I went nearly TWO WEEKS without a single Quest bar but for the last two weeks, I had one every day! Lol

Current Blessing:

Having blends who know just the right thing to say at just the right time when I really need to hear it…even if it’s the same thing I’ve been telling myself forever.

 Current Outfit:

When I haven’t been wearing yoga pants…and actually USING them for yoga, I’ve been in my scrubs (which is what I’m wearing right now) since I’ve been working an INSANE amount of hours this month!

Current Excitement:

The good thing about all those extra hours? I’ve pretty much paid for my plane ticket to Blend…TWICE! Take THAT companies who wouldn’t sponsor me! 😛

Current Link:

Now about actually purchasing that plane ticket

Current Mood:

Hopeful. I say this because I’m looking forward to May…for a fresh start. This month I’ve seen myself in one extreme or another far too many times to count…BUT I’ve also seen a few days of perfect balance. I want more of that. I want more days of feeling that I am in tune with AND RESPECTING my body. I’m ready to do what needs to be done to level out the teeter totter…because well, everybody knows it’s a bitch when you get dropped from the top!

What? You didn’t think I’d go a whole post without some pirate talk didja? 😉

What was your BEST memory from this month?

What food/drink are you currently loving?

In and Out!

Good morning, ma’ dears!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I have to say, mine went by entirely too fast (thanks to that extra shift I picked up on Saturday), but you know what’s great about Mondays? You have the chance to look back at those last few days…no matter how quickly they seemed to fly by and reflect. There were some ups and downs this weekend, but all in all, I think it had a good, no a MARVELOUS, balance! 😉

This weekend definitely had a good theme too…with a good mix of activities spent at home and out and about, I was able to enjoy some rest and relaxation on my own as well as some fabulous weather and other activities with friends like…

IN: Power nappin’

I’ve changed up my schedule a bit so that on Thursdays I only sleep for a few hours after I get off work in the morning. It seems to help me get back to more of a “normal” sleep schedule for the weekend…and it’s nice to actually have a day to do stuff instead of sacrificing it.

OUT: Feelin’ hot, hot HOT!

There’s just something about getting the weekend off to a nice and SWEATY start! I got up and hit up the 10:45am class and felt ahhhhhhhmazing…AFTER it was over! Yoga high for the win! 😉

In: Dinner Drinks and a Movie!

Drinky Drink

I had a friend over Thursday night and I just HAD to make us the “Dory” drinks that my sister whipped up for us last weekend! We sipped our tropical concoctions while watching another FREE Redbox rental, Dallas Buyers Club, which we both really enjoyed…and there may or may not have been some popcorn “shared” that I totally ended up dominating! Lol

Out: New foods & new sights!

Tandoor Indian Buffet 1

I’ve been DYING to try the lunch buffet at Tandoor, our town’s ONLY Indian restaurant, so I met a friend and tried a little (or a lot) of everything…there was definitely more naan consumed than pictured! 😉 After we finished eating, we decided to take advantage of the beeeeeeea-UTIFUL weather and hike some (new-to-me) trails at Dunbar Cave!

Dunbar Cave Hike Lake Turtles

The day was perfect with an amazing breeze…and even though I didn’t plan ahead and ended up hiking it in my flip flops (whoops?)…I have to say I got a pretty great calf workout! But my favorite part though was seeing all the little turtles sunbathing by the lake!

In: Me time

Zevia Cocktail

Later that night, I enjoyed a relaxing evening at home with my sore feet up and a drink  in my hand (seriously, you have GOT to try this combo!) while some Game of Thrones marathoning went down. I finished season two…and I swear I almost spilled my drink during the last two episodes! 😯

OUT: Back to Tandoor!

Tandoor Indian Buffet 2

Yup, after literally DREAMING of light and fluffy, toasted naan, I ended up BACK at Tandoor the very next day! I called up another friend to join me…hoping I’d be able to practice some restraint with company, but yeah, I ended up having to ROLL myself OUT! Trust me folks…it wasn’t pretty! 🙁

In: Work, work, and work some MORE!

But the good thing about work? I have amazing coworkers who give me a SCOBY to MAKE MY OWN KOMBUCHAAAAA…ok, so yeah, there’s really just one girl who actually knows what that is, but can I get a hell yeah?!

SCOBY

HELL YEAH!!! Now fingers crossed I didn’t fuck up anything and can actually drink my fermented tea in 5 more days!

OUT: Dining al fresco!

Eggs & Kabocha

After getting off work yesterday morning and sleeping for NINE (almost uninterrupted) HOURS, I took the 45 minutes I had before I had to get ready for my regular Sunday shift to whip up a thing of sweet and savory perfection!

It’s been TOO long since I’ve enjoyed my BBQ PB&J combo so I steamed half a kabocha, sprinkled on some BBQ seasoning, drizzled it with peanut flour + fig jam, and topped it with two perfectly sunny eggs! And then soaked up the last bit of daylight while I (sloppily) shoveled this bowl into my face on the patio!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m home from work and it’s POURING outside so I’m going to be crossing my fingers that in a few minutes I’ll be IN dreamland!

Did you spend your weekend IN or OUT or BOTH?

Have you ever made homemade kombucha?
